One expression pedal, remarkably flexible control

The Walrus Audio Canvas Expression takes the traditional expression pedal concept considerably further, combining two independently configurable outputs with expression, switch, control voltage and MIDI functionality. Designed to adapt to everything from conventional guitar pedals and amplifiers to synthesizers, modular systems, computers and DAWs, it can replace several dedicated controllers with a single remarkably flexible pedal.

At the heart of Canvas Expression are two independent 1/4" outputs, each of which can be configured as an Expression, Switch or Control Voltage output. This allows one treadle to control two completely different devices simultaneously, even when those devices require different types of control.

Compatibility is one of the biggest challenges with conventional expression pedals, so Walrus designed Canvas Expression to work with a wide range of expression standards. It supports TRS, RTS and TS resistance configurations, while automatic wiring detection can determine the appropriate configuration for connected equipment. Adjustable tapers and forward or reverse sweep direction provide further control over how each device responds to the movement of the treadle.

Either output can also function as a programmable switch for controlling amplifier channels, pedal functions and other compatible equipment. Switching can be configured for momentary or latching operation, with adjustable activation points at the heel, middle or toe of the treadle and selectable forward or reverse triggering.

For synthesizers and modular equipment, both outputs can generate control voltage directly. Selectable 0-3.3V and 0-5V ranges make Canvas Expression compatible with a broad range of CV-controlled synthesizers, Eurorack systems and effects.

Canvas Expression also functions as a powerful MIDI controller. Up to 16 independently assignable MIDI messages can be sent through its 1/8" TRS MIDI and USB-C connections, including Control Change and Program Change messages. High-resolution 14-bit USB MIDI provides exceptionally smooth parameter control for compatible software, making the pedal equally useful for controlling hardware, DAWs, virtual instruments and plugins.

Advanced configuration is handled through the Canvas Expression web editor, where MIDI assignments, switch behavior, TS resistance values, global settings and firmware updates can be managed without navigating complicated onboard menus.

The physical feel of the pedal can also be adjusted to suit your preference. Treadle resistance can be increased or decreased for a lighter or firmer sweep, while the contactless design eliminates the strings, potentiometers and gears found in many traditional expression pedals, reducing the number of mechanical components that can wear out or become scratchy over time.
