The JHS 424 Gain Stage is a preamp, distortion, and overdrive pedal inspired by the legendary TASCAM Portastudio 424.
Famous for shaping countless lo-fi recordings throughout the ’80s and ’90s, the Portastudio delivered elastic cleans, gritty drive, and smashed fuzz tones that left their mark on underground demos and chart-topping records alike.
Now, those unmistakable textures are reborn in a compact, pedalboard-friendly format.
Studio-Grade Character in a Pedal
At the core of the 424 Gain Stage is a faithful recreation of the original Portastudio 424 circuit, complete with vintage UPC4570 and NJM4565 op-amps. The result is the same gooey compression, rubbery clean headroom, and overloaded fuzz that made the original machine a cult favorite among artists ranging from Bruce Springsteen to Wu-Tang Clan and Spoon.
