The Free The Tone Overdriveland ODL-1A-CS is the result of more than two decades spent servicing, studying, and playing some of the world's most sought-after Dumble amplifiers. Rather than simply recreating their EQ curve or gain structure, the Overdriveland was designed to capture the qualities that make these amplifiers so inspiring: exceptional touch sensitivity, rich harmonic content, and an effortless transition from pristine cleans to expressive overdrive.
Designed by Free The Tone founder Yuki Hayashi, who has maintained numerous original Dumble amplifiers and even consulted directly with Alexander Dumble himself, the ODL-1A-CS distills decades of knowledge into an overdrive pedal that responds with the dynamics, feel, and musicality of the amplifiers that inspired it.
At the heart of the Overdriveland is a unique Normal channel that deliberately avoids traditional clipping diodes. Instead of relying on conventional clipping circuits, it produces the rich harmonic complexity and lively response associated with the clean channel of a great Dumble amplifier.
As the Gain control is increased, the Normal channel transitions naturally from shimmering cleans into light overdrive while retaining exceptional note definition and dynamic response. Even at lower gain settings, the pedal preserves the harmonic richness that gives every note greater depth and dimension.
The Drive channel builds upon this foundation using a specially developed drive module placed before the Normal channel. Rather than creating a completely different voice, it expands the existing character with greater sustain, saturation, and compression while maintaining the articulation and touch sensitivity established by the Normal channel.
The Overdriveland offers an exceptional level of control over both its feel and tonal character. The ROCK/JAZZ switch adjusts the pedal's gain structure and frequency response, while the EQ ON/GLASS switch lets you choose between the active tone circuit or a brighter, more immediate voice reminiscent of engaging the Bright switch on a vintage American tube amplifier.
The Drive channel adds dedicated PUSH and HI-CUT controls. Rather than functioning as a traditional gain control, PUSH determines how hard the Drive circuit feeds the Normal channel, allowing you to precisely shape saturation, dynamics, and perceived loudness while preserving the pedal's natural response.
The ODL-1A-CS builds upon the acclaimed Overdriveland Custom Shop platform, retaining the same specially developed drive module, variable internal power supply, and exceptionally dynamic playing experience that made the original Custom Shop version so highly regarded.
Its defining addition is the CH.CONT input, which allows the Normal and Drive channels to be switched remotely using a compatible external footswitch or switching system. Whether you're using a programmable loop switcher or placing the pedal on a larger pedalboard, the ODL-1A-CS integrates seamlessly into more sophisticated rigs while preserving the exact same sound and feel.
Like the original Custom Shop model, the Overdriveland also incorporates Free The Tone's innovative variable internal power supply, allowing the analog circuitry to operate anywhere between approximately 10V and 19V while using a standard 9V power supply. Lower voltages produce earlier breakup and increased sustain, while higher voltages deliver greater headroom, improved note separation, and exceptional dynamic range, effectively providing multiple distinct overdrive personalities within a single pedal.
Finished in a durable hammertone enclosure with laser-etched graphics and equipped with Free The Tone's acclaimed HTS (Holistic Tonal Solution) output circuit, the ODL-1A-CS delivers boutique craftsmanship, outstanding signal integrity, and one of the most authentic Dumble-inspired playing experiences available in pedal form.
