The Baker’s Dozen – A Modern Take on a 1990s Classic!

The Baker’s Dozen from Couch Electronics reimagines one of the most beloved overdrives of the 1990s—the legendary Marshall BluesBreaker—while giving it a fresh, modern identity.

Designed and built in Slovenia, this meticulously crafted pedal maintains the dynamic, low-gain character of the original while adding thoughtful refinements for today’s players.

Housed in a compact, custom-designed enclosure, the Baker’s Dozen delivers everything from a transparent clean boost to a rich, dynamic overdrive with a fairly flat EQ response.

A tone control lets you tame high frequencies, while the master volume ensures you can push your amp at any level.

True bypass relay switching with optical activation adds a premium touch, ensuring quiet and reliable operation.

Every detail of the Baker’s Dozen—right down to its solid aluminum knobs—was designed from the ground up by Couch Electronics founder Slobodan, making this pedal as much a work of art as it is a sonic tool!

I’m loving the Bakers Dozen. Its warm, chewy, and gooey.

Its not transparent at all: it imparts a distinctly warm and round character. I'd say it cuts pretty hard above 4000Hz, with the tone knob controlling that down to around 2000Hz. (Read: it wont sound bright even with the tone knob at max). There is no mid-bump nor low-cut whatsoever. I'd say it boosts everything below 500Hz, and increasingly so with the gain knob. It plays wonderfully with my 7-string guitar.

Compression goes from quite light (but not zero) at low-gain to moderate at max-gain. In my rig, the string feel is lively but with a touch of warm honey on the strings. Not super slow/sticky, but definitely in the direction of that gooey feel. Forgiving. The opposite of touch-sensitive.

The clipping is quite unique actually, being clearly biased towards the low end, but remaining really gruff and gravel-y, not wooly or fuzzy or fizzy at all. It sounds like a vintage denim jacket; its soothing, but too tough to be cozy. With a slightly hot single coil at max vol, I like the gain knob around 1pm for a nicely affected tone, notable compression, warmth, and low-end clipping when I dig in, but still sounding very natural and “guitar-like”, with softly strummed chords ringing very open and clear without distortion.

Enclosure-wise, it's obviously awesome. Really nicely made. Amber LED on top. The footswitch is perhaps the nicest I've ever experienced with its rounded cap and zero-resistance (0!) action. It's notably thin and short, which I appreciate, but it's just as wide as a standard single pedal, so it doesn't necessarily take up any less space on the board. Its the debut product from a focused and small-scale builder in Slovenia, who has clearly put a lot of love into it.
