With the Super Bee, Steve Carr strived to capture classic Blackface Fender Super Reverb tones at manageable levels.
Super Reverbs are beloved for their glassy Blackface sparkle, but with a slightly beefier midrange and punchier, tighter low end.
Well known Super Reverb players include Stevie Ray Vaughan, Johnny Marr, Robben Ford, and Derek Trucks.
The original Fender Super Reverb is a pretty loud, 40W amp.
To rein in the power while retaining the Super’s thumping feel, the Super Bee employs a pair of unusual 6BM8 output tubes.
These generate only 10 watts between them, but yield surprisingly full-throated response when pushed!
Two key features further distinguish the Super Bee from a vintage Super Reverb.
First is Carr’s renowned attenuator, which takes the output down to 2 watts.
Then, there’s the 3-way Sting switch which offers three voices: 64, 68 and 72.
64 is scooped and shimmering. 68 is a thicker, classic Blackface voice. 72 delivers higher gain and greater midrange emphasis.
Inside, the Super Bee is pure Carr: point-to-point wiring and high-end components.
When it comes to providing exquisite Fender-style big-amp tones at manageable levels, the Super Bee is truly a champion!
