A modern re-imagining of the 1960s Uni-Vibe!

The Berkeley is the result of 2 years of rabid fascination with the original 1960s Uni-Vibe circuit.

From the get go, Horrothia elected against creating another clone of this classic design.

Horrothia wanted to design a brother in arms to their Type One Chorus.

Their version had to include a slew of modern updates, but an entirely old-school analog signal patch.

First, Horrothia set out to fix some of the original Vibe’s oddities.

Their Vibe had to be louder, smaller, brighter in tone and very consistent from unit to unit.

Then, Horrothia set out to define the exact factors that created the original Vibe’s unmistakable ‘chocolate smoke’ tone.

Original units were measured, scientific papers were read and prototypes ensued.

Enter the Berkeley! Its signal path is almost exactly identical to the original late-1960s vibe.

The pedal’s loaded with Carbon film resistors, Mylar caps and transistors with similar characteristics to the originals’.

Some small key changes have been made (in line with mods that were done in the late-1960s) to open up the low-end and add more liquid movement.

Hand chosen Vactrols are matched one by one to make sure that every component works within a well defined ‘sweet spot’ range. No guessing here!

As every original vibe was different, there are 3 trimmers inside the Berkeley to tune its behavior to your idea of the perfect vibe.

Lets check out the controls.

Turning up Input Impedance brings brightness and volume.

You’ll find a more modern sound at one extreme and a warmer and chewier sound at the other.

Phase Notch Depth lets you fine tune the balance between the wet and dry signals in chorus mode.

The Voicing control is more complex. At one extreme, the LFO shows the full idiosyncratic behavior of the vintage units.

Dialing it back to the other extreme, the Berkeley shows less and less of these characteristics and the depth becomes as wide as the unit can operate.

Wider sweeps paint a more contemporary picture.

All of these controls are continuous, so dial in YOUR position.

Modern features.

Another Berkeley evolution is the choice of bypass modes.

Originals just switched off the LFO, so audio still passed through the circuit when bypassed.

By holding down the footswitch on power up, the Berkeley changed to relay True Bypass.

The Footswitch jack also allows you to plug in a TRS expression pedal and control the speed like an old vibe.

Even bringing the heel back switches the LFO off / bypasses the unit like an old one!
